Marion Street Community Garden

July 9, 2010

Each week, every class walks down the street to City Blossom‘s Marion Street Community Art Garden for a workshop.  Because the garden is right in the Shaw neighborhood, we hope that students will not only take ownership of the garden as they plant, tend, harvest, and cook in it, but that they will also create connections and work with other members of the community, both young and old.

Today, the 2nd grade class learned about the garden, found cucumbers to harvest and made lemonade.

Miss Lola shows students part of the garden and what might be growing there:

Now it’s the students’ turn to find a vegetable that’s ready for harvesting:

Shad found a cucumber!  “It tastes sour.”

Next, Cyniah used a mortar and pestle to crush some lemon for the lemonade:

Delicious!
